A Choice of One is No Choice at All
Compare and Save
There is a best way to shop for insurance and save money. Just remember that a choice of one is no choice at all. Many of us have a trusted insurance agent, and we should give them the chance to quote or re-quote our insurance, but by no means should we consider them the final authority. We should compare.
Comparing insurance quotes is the best way to find the best rates, save money, and put your family first. In fact, you could save hundreds of dollars a year by shopping around, sometimes, thousands. And there is a process that is the best way to do that, a process that allows you to give your agent a chance but not to let them dictate how much you are going to spend (or waste) on insurance.
What is the Process?
Start with your agent! Tell them what you are looking for. Do you need homeowners, car insurance, life insurance, or a bundle? Do you have any toys that need to be covered, things like a motorcycle or recreational vehicle? Get him started on a quote. At the same time, think of another company that you believe is worth checking. Start on a quote from them. Now you’ll have two choices.
Now, get a quote from an Independent Insurance Broker. This will multiply your efforts because a good Independent Insurance Broker will have access to several Insurance Carriers and learn more about your particular circumstances. They’ll be able to check on the largest number of discount plans. Bundling your insurance can save you money, but believe it or not, it’s possible that Unbundling them can too. Some insurance companies specialize in certain types of clients or insurance products, and a good Independent Broker will know about those companies.
If at all possible, don’t be in a rush. Instant online quoting systems can only process so much information, which means you are giving away savings for convenience. If they don’t have all the information, they can only set their price by assuming the worst. Did you know that, depending on the carrier, there are discounts for being a member of the Triple-A Club or professional discounts for veterans, police officers, and other trades? There are discounts if your pool has a fence, if your roof, plumbing, or HVAC have been updated. Every company is different, and no single online quoting system can take all the available discounts into account. But a good Independent Broker will know who offers what. It may take a little longer for these quotes to come back, but the savings will be worth the time.
Other Things to Keep in Mind
Keep a few other things in mind when comparing insurance quotes. First, make sure you are getting apples-to-apples comparisons. Some companies may offer lower rates but have a higher deductible. Others may have a lower premium but a shorter coverage period.
Second, be sure to factor in your personal circumstances. If you have a young family, you’ll need a different policy than someone who is retired. Compare rates, but also compare the coverage. If you have any questions, ask your agent.
